The Centre for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN) is a research unit of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), created in 2013 after the integration of the former State Laboratory, ITN. C2TN performs R&D, Advanced Training & Education, Consulting and Services in Nuclear Sciences and Technologies, aiming to be a strategic Unit for the Portuguese R&D and innovation policies in this area. The quality of the research done at C2TN was recognised as Excellent by the national funding agency FCT in the latest evaluation exercise (2015-2020).

Vincent Debut, researcher of C2TN, is involved in a prize winning collaborative project: "Singing bronze: material sciences and acoustic engineering advanced techniques toward the preservation of the Mafra carillon bells". The prize was awarded by Banco Santander Totta.

Most cited article in the last two years of the Physica Scripta journal


The article “Surface analysis of tiles and samples exposed to the first JET campaigns with the ITER-like wall", JP Coad, E. Alves, NP Barradas, A. Baron-Wiechec, N. Catarino, K. Heinola, J. Likonen, M. Mayer, GF Matthews, P. Petersson, A. Widdowson, Physica Scripta T159 (2014) 014012, co-authored by C2TN members, is one of the most cited articles in the last two years of the prestigious Physica Scripta journal, published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.



C2TN researcher leads two new EU projects

Marta Almeida, a C2TN researcher, leads two new European projects.
ClimACT is a 1.37 M€ project approved within the Low Carbon Economy priority area of the Interreg Sudoe program. The project aims at promoting the transnational cooperation to solve common problems from the Southwest Europe region. More information in this link.
LIFE Index-Air is another 1.37 M€ project approved within the Environment and Resource Efficiency priority area of the LIFE Program. The main objective is to incorporate a database of outdoor and indoor air quality and a package of models to develop an innovative and versatile policy tool that will establish a relation between population exposure to mixtures of PM compounds and emission sources. Pires de Matos receives the Romão Dias award


It was today announced that the “Alberto Romão Dias” award (2016 edition) was attributed to our colleague António Pires de Matos, senior researcher of the IST-UL (CTN) and invited Emeritus Professor of FCT-UNL. The award will be presented during the conference of the Chemical Division of Inorganic and Bioinorganic of the SPQ, which this year will take place in Sintra on 7 and 8 October (http://11icc.eventos.chemistry.pt), at which Prof. Pires de Matos will give a key note talk. A study on air quality in Lisbon’s gyms led by Carla Ramos, PhD student of Marta Almeida, both members of C2TN, was reported in the New York Times on November 5th, 2014, and after, replicated in more than 60 newspapers all over the world.
