QEf - A BRIEF HISTORY
The QEf group has a long history. Its genesis relies on the work of Dr. António Pires de Matos in the Nuclear Fuel and Transuranium Elements Chemistry Service of the Chemistry Sector / Nuclear Sciences and Techniques Department of LNETI (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial) since the second half of the 1970’s. In 1985, LNETI was reorganized, ICEN (Instituto de Ciência e Engenharia Nucleares) was created and the group name changed to Actinides and Rare-Earths Chemistry and Technologies Group. Late in 1992, another change occured to Organometallic Chemistry of Actinides and Lantanides Group, coinciding with the change of LNETI to INETI (Instituto Nacional de Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial). In 1994, ITN (Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear) was created and the group name changed a little bit to Inorganic and Organometallic Chemsitry. Finally, in 2012, with the integration of ITN in IST (Instituto Superior Técnico) and the creation of C2TN (Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares), the name change to the current one. The name of the group has changed but not its focus that is still always in f-element chemistry.
The strength of a team is either in its present people as in its past ones, because today research is built on top of accumulated experience. Honoring its history, the research activities of the QEf Group are presently centered in the study of the chemistry of lanthanides and actinides at fundamental and applied levels, with focus on topics of relevance in environmental, nuclear and materials sciences.
During those almost 40 years, in the group or under supervision of group members:
• More than 50 graduation and PhD students were trained
• More than 225 papers were published in international journals
• 5 Patents were registered
• 23 PhD theses were written and defended
• 20 MSc theses were produced
• Books, book chapters, conference organizations and invited talks saw the light of day.
Let’s keep the spirit and prepare the future.
