DOSIMETRY OF BORON-LOADED CELLS IRRADIATED WITH THERMAL NEUTRONS

 

In collaboration with the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Radiation Protection and Safety groups, novel agents for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) were evaluated following the irradiation of glioma cells at the thermal column of the Portuguese Research Reactor. The neutron and photon fields at the irradiation facility were characterized experimentally and via Monte Carlo simulations using the MCNPX code. As the therapeutic dose is imparted by the micrometric-range alpha particles produced in the BNC reaction, we have determined for the first time the various dose components at the subcellular scale using the GEANT4 package.
