OBSERVATION OF STRONG EFFECTS OF ELECTRIC CHARGE STATE UPON INNER-SHELL TRANSITIONS IN INSULATOR REE OXIDES

Overlap of the spectra from two irradiations of Yb2O3 using a beam of protons of 1.1 MeV. The charged-up condition put in evidence by the high background between channels 1000–2000 (black line spectrum), strongly affects the Ka2/Ka1 ratio, which should be independent of the ionization process. This result puts in evidence an important relation between local electric fields in the material and the intensity of transition ratios, so far assumed a minor effect.
