PROJECT ENVIREE - ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT METHODS FOR EXTRACTION OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS FROM SECONDARY SOURCES

An intercomparison exercise was performed using both ICP-MS (CHALMERS) and INAA (IST-ID) for selected samples: Covas (PT), New Krankberg (SE), Ruigtepoort 1 and Ruigtepoort 2 (SA). IST-ID presented the data at the 4th ENVIREE progress meeting at AGH Krakow University and at the 5th ENVIREE progress meeting in South Africa (WP1, WP3, WP5). IST-ID continued the experiments with samples from New Krankberg and Covas using two different composition simulant solutions, to carry out a semi-quantitative analysis of the metals in the aqueous phases by ESI-MS mass spectrometer and ICP-MS. The ENVIREE Krakow Summer School on Rare Earth Elements recovery and environmental issues was carried out in 2017. Field trips took place at both progress meetings (ZGH Boleslaw Lead and Zinc Industry). Oral presentations were made by IST members during the progress meetings (INAA vs ICP-MS; Development of efficient and environment friendly separation processes for REE; Training, Education, Dissemination and Uptake in ENVIREE). Two lectures were presented by IST at the Summer Course (Secondary Sources Characterization and Sampling; and Chemical and Mineralogical Properties of REE Secondary Sources).
