C2TN AT LOURES InSS

The outreach group was present on the 3rd edition of Loures InSS that occurred at Parque Urbano de Santa Iria de Azóia last June. The main objectives of the Loures InSS (a partnership between the Câmara de Loures and Instituto Superior Técnico) are to transmit good environmental and citizenship practices and to value the environmental potential of the city.

Day 1

The day was incredibly windy, but that certainly did not discourage our brave scientists! They were there all day, ready to welcome you. In the morning, those who passed by had the chance to get to know a little more about the work that is done in C2TN in the area of advanced materials, while in the afternoon we had a demonstration of 3D molecules that especially delighted the kids.

Day 2

In the morning we had a blind tasting of our delicious strawberries which proved not only that food irradiation is perfectly safe, but also that it doesn't cause alteration of the food. We could also observe how ionizing radiation can contribute to the valorization of toxic waste waters of the textiles industry. The afternoon was dedicated to the measurement of air quality.

C2TN engages with students from Pegões

C2TN participated in an initiative involving 9th graders from the School EB 2,3 of Pegões, in collaboration with Ciência Viva and Câmara Municipal do Montijo. The main goal of this initiative was to share with the students the research developed at C2TN. The PhD student Joana Madureira took the lead of this initiative, which involved different activities.  Joana met the students on April 10 on a first visit to their school. The visit consisted of a class about ionizing radiation and how it can be safely used for the benefit of society. Joana spoke about its potential applications, specifically on the treatment of wastewaters from cork industry, sparking the students curiosity. On April 23, the students, together with Joana, visited Amorim Florestal, S.A, a very important and well known Portuguese cork company. Here, they had the opportunity to learn not only about the cork transformation processes but also the origin of the Joana work and its impact. Their last day together was on the past May 11, when the students visited C2TN. They were taken to visit the labs LETAL- Laboratory of Technological Assays in Clean Rooms and LM3 - Macromolecular Materials Laboratory, allowing them to see how and where the magic happens.

48èmes Journées des Actinides (JdA2018)

The international conference JdA2018 just followed the 12th SPCA, being held in the Hotel Golf Mar, Praia de Porto Novo, Portugal, between 21 and 24 March 2018. It covered all aspects (fundamental and applied) related to the physics and chemistry of the 5f elements, their alloys and compounds. More than seventy experts and young researchers from thirteen American, Asian and European countries participated in this conference, emphasizing the exchanges and discussions on the current issues of the different actinide fields.

Within the social programme, a visit to Adega Cooperativa da Lourinhã, inserted in the Lourinhã brandy region, one of the three brandy regions in the world with “Denominação de Origem Controlada” (Denomination of Controlled Origin), together with the French “Cognac” and “Armagnac”, took place on Friday after lunch. Friday was also the day of the Conference Dinner, where one Best young research award and two Life-time research awards were given to Dr. Boris Dorado and Professors Peter Rogl and James Tobin, respectively. During the Closing Remarks session three more awards were given, one Best young researcher's oral presentation award and two Best young researcher's poster awards, to the PhD students Evgeny Gerber, Oleksandra Koloskova and Sanjib Chowdhury.

12th School on the Physics and Chemistry of the Actinides (12th SPCA)

The 12th SPCA was held between 19 and 21 March 2018 in the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear of Instituto Superior Técnico, located at Bobadela (near Lisboa), Portugal, being organized as a tutorial introductory session to the conference 48èmes Journées des Actinides. Forty participants attended the seventeen lessons of the school, which indeed was an unique opportunity for students (and others) to gain knowledge from international expert master-classes in the various areas of different actinide science aspects. 12th SPCA was a great success, allowing students and young researchers to meet, question and learn from experts in a relaxed and friendly environment.
