How did rivers shape the first peasant societies of prehistory?
This is the question that Professor Ana Catarina Sousa will explore in her presentation of the project “ANSOR – Anthropisation of Sorraia Valley”: An approach to peasant societies from the 6th to the 2nd millennium BCE, at the next session of the C²TN Academy, under the Thematic Line ‘Earth Systems, Radioactivity & Cultural Heritage’.
The session will take place on 27 February at the Auditorium of Loures Campus of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. Drawing on 43 years of research in the Sorraia Valley, Professor Ana Catarina Sousa will show how rivers – by supplying water, fertile soils, and transport routes – helped establish communities and shaped settlement patterns, agriculture, trade networks, and symbolic practices.
From the emergence of Neolithic agriculture, through Copper Age ditch sites, to the decline of settlements in the early Bronze Age, the talk will adopt an interdisciplinary approach, integrating archaeology, geography, geomorphology, palaeobotany, and archaeometry.
Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Património Cultural, I.P., Professor at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, and researcher at UNIARQ, Centro de Arqueologia da Universidade de Lisboa, Ana Catarina Sousa is a specialist in Neolithic Prehistory and has directed over 80 archaeological excavations.
