IRIS - Ionizing Radiation Facilities

Ionizing Radiation Facility (IRIS) is an infrastructure installed in 2009 in the framework of a FCT project (REEQ/996/BIO/2005). Its mission is to investigate, develop and apply ionizing radiation technologies in material, environmental and health domains.

Both internal and external users have available two main equipment:

  • PRECISA22 – an experimental cobalt-60 irradiator with a sample rotation device to achieve uniform dose distribution at sample position (maximum dose rate = 10 Gy min-1, October 2023)
  • LINAC – a linear accelerator delivering up to 10 MeV electron or photon beams (produced by electron/X-ray conversion).

The RD&I work performed at IRIS results from collaborations among C2TN members, cooperation with other research units and contracts with the private sector, and benefits from the local expertise and equipment available at the Clean Areas Technological Tests Laboratory (LETAL) and the Macromolecular Materials Laboratory (LM3).
