Mössbauer Spectroscopy Laboratory
Two transmission Mössbauer Spectrometers are available. These spectrometers may be coupled to a continuous-flow liquid-He cryostat or a bath cryostat enabling studies with the absorber in the temperature range 1.5-300 K. This facility allows characterizing a wide range of different natural and synthetic materials with applications in material sciences (metal organic frameworks, mixed conductor oxides for fuel cells, etc.), human health (biomolecules, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles) and earth sciences (namely mineralogical characterization of soil samples, Fe speciation in mine tailings). Conversion electron Mössbauer spectra of surface layers, thin films and multilayers may also be obtained at room temperature. Currently existing sources of 57Co for 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Other sources such as 119mSn and 151Sm for the study of samples containing 151Eu and 119Sn, respectively, can be acquired whenever a research program justifies it.
This equipment is available to the scientific community, on the basis of research cooperation and co-authorship of publications in international scientific journals and presentations in Conferences.
