Nitrate concentrations in groundwater systems, often exceed the statutory limits for drinking water, defined in the Groundwater Directive (GWD, 2006/118/EC), making these groundwater bodies fail to meet ´Good Status´ according to the exigencies of the European Water Framework Directive.
