PhD Comunica at C²TN inaugurates conference cycle with “Chemistry of the Cryosphere”

Professor João Canário will be the guest speaker at the first session of the Conference Cycle on Ethics, Management and Innovation in Scientific Research. He is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences (Environmental Chemistry) from NOVA University of Lisbon, and also works as an Adjunct Professor at Université Laval and Trent University. He is also a visiting researcher at the Center for Northern Studies and Vice-President of the International Arctic Science Committee.

A specialist in Environmental Chemistry, he dedicates himself to the study of biogeochemical cycles, with a particular focus on mercury, participating in scientific campaigns in the Arctic and Antarctic since 2008. His research focuses on the impact of climate change on permafrost degradation, the release of greenhouse gases and the mobilization of contaminants, as well as on mercury dynamics and the effects of human activity on southern ecosystems. Integrated into PROPOLAR projects, funded by FCT and European programs, it contributes to deepening knowledge about the role of polar regions as sensitive indicators of global environmental changes.

In this session, João Canário will share his scientific trajectory, from his training in Technological Chemistry to international recognition in research on permanently frozen soil, highlighting the relevance of studies in polar regions for assessing the “health” of the planet.

This conference inaugurates the Cycle of Conferences on Ethics, Management and Innovation in Scientific Research, an initiative promoted by the PhD Students of the C²TN of Instituto Superior Técnico, through the PhD Comunica group, which aims to foster good practices, stimulate dialogue and promote critical reflection in the scientific community.
