ERRS Young Investigator Award to the C2TN PhD student Luís Marques

Luís Marques, a PhD student of C2TN, supervised by Dr. Pedro Vaz from C2TN/IST and Dr. Alberto Vale from IPFN/DEEC/IST, was one of the winners of the Young Investigator Awards 2024 from the European Radiation Research Society (ERRS).

Luís will have the opportunity to present his research work orally at the 48th ERRS meeting, which will take place from 10-13 of September at the University of Aveiro.

His study focuses on the development of a lightweight, compact and low-cost portable radiation detection system, based on plastic scintillators with silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) for the detection of gamma radiation, beta particles and neutrons in Security and Defense applications. In this study, the use of informative path planning (IPP) algorithms is also proposed to decide, based on real-time data (detector counts), the route to be taken by the detection system during an inspection of a container used for maritime cargo transport. This approach aims to significantly improve the estimation of the position of a hidden gamma radiation source and reduce inspection time compared to predefined paths.
