Researcher Marta Almeida, from Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares at Instituto Superior Técnico, signs an opinion piece addressing one of today’s most pressing environmental and public health challenges — air pollution.
In the article, the researcher highlights that, although invisible, air pollution remains the leading environmental risk to human health, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations. She also stresses the importance of cooperation between authorities, the scientific community, and citizens to ensure the implementation of effective and sustainable policies.
Marta Almeida further presents the work carried out at the ObservAR Laboratory, located at Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, where emerging pollutants — such as ultrafine particles, black carbon, heavy metals and microplastics — are studied, and citizen science is promoted as a tool for awareness-raising and social engagement.
